On December 19th, about four weeks after opening a Chase account upon my arrival in the United States, an email from the bank arrived in my inbox. The message, devoid of personal touch, was a boilerplate notification I suspected had been sent to thousands before me. They issued no explanation, only orders: shred your cards, cancel automated payments, update your digital wallet, and wait for a letter. The letter would provide a full explanation. Or so they claimed. It has not yet arrived. I had thousands of dollars in that account. Bills were set to auto-pay. I’d just moved countries. Christmas was six days away.
